An extremely talented drummer, John Hollenbeck is perfectly comfortable in small ensembles or larger groups, next to the most celebrated names in jazz (Fred Hersch, Tony Malaby, Kenny Wheeler, Bob Brookmeyer, David Krakauer), in world music (Pablo Ziegler) or in the contemporary domain (Meredith Monk). He's also gained notoriety for leading five groups, including the Claudia Quintet and the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, with whom he's been nominated three times for the prestigious Grammy Award. Ever eager to explore musical styles in their myriad forms, this exceptionally versatile and creative artist has been able to forge a singular voice that's expressive, accessible and enlightened. He teaches composition and improvisation at the Berlin Jazz Institute.
