Jazz is an artform that often strikes fear into the hearts of those who can't get into it, who consider it a music reserved for specialists. Popular and hybrid in essence, it's a source of exciting paradoxes, its language complex, its rich and colourful history both impressive and seductive. In response to this mixture of fear and curiosity, with a view to inviting into the world of jazz those who feel too intimidated to cross its threshold, Daniel Yvinec has conceived a series of encounters with the general public, which can take place either separately or as part of an ONJ residence. For the scope of operation to be as wide as possible, the ONJ will welcome amongst its ranks, either in the full orchestra or in smaller groups made up of orchestra members, other musicians, both amateur and professional, encountered during these diverse events.
For general public
Presented by Daniel Yvinec (bass)
and Guillaume de Cahssy (piano)
Daniel Yvinec and Guillaume de Chassy, as well as playing together in a longstanding duo of renown, share a real passion for teaching. The complementary nature of their approach in this field has been tried, tested and greatly appreciated in many different contexts, from classical music festivals to workshops for schoolchildren, adults, amateur and professional musicians. Studiously avoiding offputting technical terminology, they come to grips, in a simple and playful way, with all the different elements of jazz : improvisation, rhythm, melody, harmony and interaction between musicians, finding real connections between the music and everyone's own experience. Through the use of well-known melodies (nursery rhymes, pop songs, jazz standards and classical tunes) and with constant reference to instrumental examples, Yvinec and de Chassy invite their audience into the "jazz kitchen", unselfconsciously to weigh and measure ingredients and see just how they can be combined to make great music.
For general public
Presented by the musicians of the orchestra
This programme goes beyond the idea of public rehearsal (which remains, of course, a possible option), inviting participants to sit in the orchestra itself and be taken in hand by individual orchestra members, who act as tutors / musicians. During rehearsals, they tell the "students" at their side about the techniques they use, discuss the relationship between the writing and improvisation, and explain the design and function of their instruments, acoustic or electronic.
For schoolchildren, amateur and professional musicians
The Orchestra offers music school students and amateur and professional musicians alike a made-to-measure introduction to one of its current projects, performing arrangements specially conceived for the occasion (prior work will be necessary to determine the level of the participants and the instruments they play).
For amateur and professional musicians
Set up by Daniel Yvinec and the orchestra members, the ONJ Small Groups (solo, duo, trio) are an ideal meeting place for other musicians who can join in according to different prearranged scenarios.
