VOLUME 7
PAOLO DAMIANI 2000-2002

2012, AJON / Abeille Musique

The first foreign musician to be appointed Musical Director of the ONJ since its inception, Paolo Damiani took charge in the year 2000 with a two-year mandate. Born in Rome, he already had a longstanding reputation thanks to his writing and multiple exchanges with other artistic fields.

As a cellist, Damiani had been an exemplary member of the Italian Instabile Orchestra since 1990, doubling as a festival-organizer: he created the Roccella Janica Festival in Calabria in 1982, and also “Una Striscia di Terra Feconda” which he directed with Armand Meignan.

Seconded by ONJ-pioneer François Jeanneau, Paolo Damiani headed an orchestra which featured a Young guard of daring improvisers who are still very much present on the jazz scene today. Volume 7 in the collection invites listeners to rediscover the path taken by Damiani’s ONJ, as a complement to the album Charmediterranéen, a unique testament on record released by the prestigious ECM label in 2002.
