When
the Waltz inspires a Jazz Orchestra
Waltz: " Dance in triple time in which each couple turns on itself, all
the while in movement • Piece of free form instrumental music
composed using the rhythm of this dance "
So much for the dictionary definition; but what are the origins of the
waltz? German musicians are in no doubt it's of German origin, while
for the Austrians, it's Viennese, and in the eyes of the Poles it's
a national treasure... Not to mention the Italian volta, the English
waltz or the French valse musette... Musicians of every persuasion –
folk, popular, classical, jazz – have been inspired by this unique
form.
With Sentimental 3/4, Franck Tortiller's ONJ offers its own take on
the waltz with an original programme freely inspired by diverse musical
cultures between compositional precision and improvisation. Specially for this
programme, Franck Tortiller's ONJ has welcomed accordionist Eric Bijon and beefed up the horn section with trumpeter Herbert Joos and saxophonist Bruno Wilhelm.
